The Town of Richmond Hill is in southeastern Queens County, New York. The population was 37,468 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1772 by Samuel Johnson (Feb 4, 1733 – May 19, 1819), a retired English sea captain who named it for his son Robert.

It was the fifth municipality made from the Town of Hempstead. The first mayor of the town was Hon. John Lefferts, elected in 1868. Which the town later decided to name Lefferts Blvd after the Hon John Lefferts.
